Roman times
Into these areas of ancient Illyricum, the Romans began to penetrate between 35 and 34 BC under the leadership of Octavian. After the Great Illyrian Uprising, and the war waged by the Roman Empire against the Pannonian-Dalmatian tribes from 6 to 9 under the leadership of Tiberius and his nephew Germanicus, Illyricum was finally conquered.
Illyricum was then divided into two provinces; Pannonia and Dalmatia. Pannonia was later, in the 2nd century, divided into Pannonia Superior (Upper Pannonia in the west) and Pannonia Inferior (Lower Pannonia in the east). That is when intensive urbanization began.
Varaždinske Toplice, known in ancient times as Aquae Iasae, was named after the Iasi tribe that inhabited the area before the arrival of the Romans. They belonged to Pannonia Superior, located on the river Bednja, near the river Drava. They were located on the road that connected Poetovio, today's Ptuj in Slovenia, and Ioviu-Botivo, today's Ludbreg. These two cities were important trading centers during the Roman Empire.
Describe your image
The exact year of the beginning of the construction of Aquae Iasae, the forerunner of today's spa, is not known, but it is assumed that it was during the Flavian dynasty somewhere between 96 and 69 BC.
The
In addition to Varaždinske toplice, in the area inhabited by Jasi, there were several other well-known spas today, such as Krapinske, Stubičke, Tuheljske, Čateški and Daruvarski.
The public part of the Roman settlement was located on the highest terrace of the hill Varaždinske Toplice, today there is a park and archeological site. The residential part of Aquae Iasae was on the terraces that descend to the foot of the hill, and at the very foot of the craft-trade and fair facilities were established.
At the end of the 3rd century, the Aquae Iasae were ravaged by the Goths. At the beginning of IV. century they are not restored by the Roman emperor
Today, in memory of Roman history and the restoration of the then Roman settlement Aqua Iasae, organized by the Tourist Board of Varaždinske Toplice every year in early June, Roman Emperor Constantine comes to Varaždinske Toplice accompanied by muses, protectors of water sources and his Roman legions.
It is the official start of the tourist season every year
That weekend, Varaždinske Toplice came to life in the Roman spirit. The city is full of inhabitants dressed in ancient Roman togas, and the occasional program is held at the archeological site and in the park above the ancient Roman Spas until late at night through socializing by the campfires, in abundance of traditional food and drink in the Roman camp with Romans, Celts, Iasi and others. to friends from the Roman province of Panonia Superior and beyond.

The song was set to music by Zvonko Špišić and the first performer of the song "Tears for the hills of Zagorje" was Vice Vukov. You can listen to the song at the beginning of the background music video from 2019 or by clicking on this lyrics.

Alan Ford Monument
Did you know that in Varaždinske Toplice, as the only one in the world, there is a monument to Alan Ford ? We all read the famous cult comic Alan Ford, translated and edited by Mr. Nenad Brixy (also known by pseudonyms as Timothy Tatcher and Diogenes), a journalist and writer, born in Varaždinske Toplice.
The
A memorial plaque was erected at Nenad Brixy's birthplace and a monument to Tibor Turkalj was unveiled - a figure of Grunf, the legendary inventor at TNT, made of glass.
For Nenad Brixy's translations, everyone, even the authors themselves, agrees that they are better than the original. Brixy, they say, with his unique style and recognizable, sharp language, brought a black humor into the dialogues of the heroes that readers had never heard before. Even comic book screenwriter Max Bunker (drawn by Robert Raviola) said Brixy was one of the few translators to succeed.
Sv. Martin - 11. 11. - City Day
In a wine-growing region like this, St. Martin’s Day is a very important and significant day; not only to winemakers, because that is the day when wine must turns into wine. It is a significant event and is regularly ritually celebrated with the baptism of young wine at joint merry gatherings not only in private clients, but also in restaurants throughout Croatia.
In Varaždinske Toplice, the main town square is the Trg sv. Marina, next to the main town square a representative area of the city center. Festive sessions are held in the city, and that day is spontaneously a big holiday of this area, which is adorned with a thousand-year tradition of growing vines. They do not say in vain that the capital of Zagorje is a vineyard.
Be sure to visit the Old Town and the Church of St. Martina
In the Middle Ages, the settlement of Toplissa was formed in this area, which became the property of the Zagreb Chapter and remained so for more than eight centuries. In order to protect his property, Kaptol built a fort next to the parish church in 1376. During the 16th century, at the time of the Turkish threat, this fort was extended and reinforced with towers and a moat around the fort, which was filled with thermal water.
On the site of the moat of that time is today's Tkalčićeva Street, next to which are located Cafe Martin, Parish Hall of the church and the oldest the first folk village school in Croatia, founded 12 years before the discovery of America.
A chain bridge was also built, later transformed into today's entrance toNative museum. In addition to the three existing corner towers, two more were built - eastern and western. With the cessation of Turkish raids in 1695. this fortress was remodeled into a baroque castle which was later turned into the first spa hotel.
The church is a Gothic building from the 15th century.
It was built on the site of an earlier parish church that was mentioned as early as 1334.
In 1762, the church was renovated in the Baroque style, and in 1765 the church got an organ - the work of A. Romer from Graz. This extremely valuable baroque instrument was expertly restored and according to it Varaždinske Toplice was included in the programs Varaždin Baroque evenings.
In 1885, two baroque marble altars were installed in the church, which were made at the end of the 18th century by the sculptor Francesco Robba for the Zagreb Cathedral. During the restoration of the cathedral at that time, the altars were transferred from the Zagreb Cathedral to the St. Martin's Church. These are the altars of St. Catherine and the altar of St. Barbara.
These altars, together with the aforementioned organ, form a baroque ambience of exceptional and priceless value
Votive pillar (pil) to St. Fabian and Sebastian
The plague pandemic in the Middle Ages that affected the whole of Europe was preceded by years of famine at the beginning of the 14th century and constant war conflicts. It is believed that 25 million people died during that pandemic, which was a quarter of the European population at the time.
Europe has never faced such a disease before. For example, in Vienna in the first half of 1349, 700-800 people died every day, and during the worst plague, up to 1,400 people died in one day. The pandemic was at its peak in the 14th century and ended only at the end of the 17th century.
Varaždinske Toplice was also decimated and devastated by the plague at that time. In the 17th century, the spa was twice destroyed by fire. In addition to the Parish Church of St. Martin, Kaštela and the Chapel of St. Only a few old houses were preserved at that time.
Legend has it that one Sunday, on January 20, Saints Fabijan and Sebastian saved the population of Varaždinske Toplice, in this very place, from the plague.
Every year on the day of St. Fabijan and Sebastijan, every January 20th, a holy mass is held in front of the votive pillar, and every Sunday of the year, exactly at noon, the sirens from the roof of the city hall sound a uniform tone for one minute.
In memory of those times in 1772, a votive pillar (pil) was built to Saint Fabijan and Sebastian. Apartments Dajčić are located right next to this votive pillar.
And the Dajčić Apartments house was built at that time, in 1772.
